Freedom from Bondage

Resentment Prayer pg. 552 of the AA Big Book

If you have a resentment you want to be fee of, if you will pray for the person or the thing that you resent, you will be free. If you will ask in prayer for everything you want for yourself to be given to them, you will be free. Ask for their health, their prosperity, their happiness, and you will be free. Even when you don't really want it for them and your prayers are only words and you don't mean it, go ahead and do it anyway. Do it every day for two weeks, and you will find you have come to mean it and to want it for them, and you will realize that where you used to feel bitterness and resentment and hatred, you now feel compassionate understanding and love.

This is a foreign concept for me but, I'm finding that if I want to remain sober I'll have to get uncomfortable from time to time. If I'm not uncomfortable I'm not growing. Hell, I have to remind myself that I've really been uncomfortable for the last 25 years anyways (Not In a Good Way). I was always raised to practice the Golden Rule "Do onto others, as you would have them do onto you". That being said I try but, sometimes it's damn hard to do. When I was drinking it was almost impossible due to my extreme intoxication. I definitely don't want to go back there! The big book tells me that resentments are the number #1 offender for the alcoholic. So today I pray to my Higher Power to help me forgive and forget all of the many perceived wrongs of my past. I also know I will go to any length to hang on to the peace and serenity that sobriety has given me today. As I sat here writing this piece I'm so grateful for my sobriety today and I accept my life for exactly what it is. I can't go back and change my past and I'm not going to worry about my future. I'm just going to enjoy the rest of today and as long as I don't drink, tomorrow looks promising too!

What we really have is a daily reprieve contingent on the maintenance of our spiritual condition. Every day is a day when we must carry the vision of God's will into all our activities.
